Distinguishing between wants and needs is a foundational concept for financial literacy. A "need" is something that it is impossible to live without such as food, shelter, clothing, water or air. A "want" is something that you desire but is not necessary to your survival like a video game, brand name clothes, or a flat screen TV.
Teaching kids to tell the difference between the two is a great start to helping children to become patient, aware and skillful consumers. It also helps them to prioritize and decide what the appropriate value or urgency for an item actually is.
